Made in Georgia by artisan Andy Schuyler. From the artist:
Practically all the crosses I make are of Dogwood. I get the dogwood from tree companies that have cut them and save them for me. I also get some from friends or customers who have dogwood trees that need to be removed. I use dogwood because of the legend which maintains that dogwood trees were once large, strong trees and it was the wood used to make the cross used to crucify Jesus. As Jesus was hanging on the cross he sensed that the dogwood was ashamed and embarrassed about being used for such a terrible purpose. Jesus promised the dogwood it would no longer grow large enough to be used to make a cross to crucify a human. It is now a small undergrowth tree and I use the wood to make commemorative crosses. Every cross is unique because the wood varies with the age and condition of the tree. They all look the same on the outside, but you never know what you are going to find on the inside. I call it "God's hidden wonders".
